ROBERT L. (ROCKY) LANE

Robert L. (Rocky) Lane, 77, passed away May 29, 2013, in Ridgecrest, Calif.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Melvern United Methodist Church. Robert will be interred in his family plot in his beloved Kansas.

He was born July 19, 1935, in Ottawa, Kan., to Charley and Thelma Lane.

He lived his first few years in the Chipawa Hills, southwest of Ottawa. He moved with his parents to Melvern, Kan., when he was 4.

He graduated from Melvern High School in 1953 and later received his associate’s degree from Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash.

He retired from the U.S. Navy as an Air Traffic Control Senior Chief with more than 26 years of honorable service in l979.

After retirement from active duty, he worked for the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake as head of the Airspace Management Office. He owned and operated a pistachio ranch for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nina; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Tim Johnson, Ridgecrest, Calif., and Flora and Troy Podratz, Palmdale, Calif.; grandchildren, Calvin, Emily, Hannah and Sam Johnson, and Madeline Harris, Alexia and Brady Podratz; sisters, Neva Kay (John) Hagen and Mary Alice (Robert) Elder, Melvern, Kan.; half-sister, Ruth Kitt, Overbrook, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Thelma Lane; half-brothers, Clifford and Harold Lane; and son-in-law, Courtney Harris.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Robert’s name to the Melvern Pride.
