ALPHA DELTA KAPPA

The April 9 meeting of the Sigma Chapter of ADK was at 5 p.m. at the Ottawa City Hall meeting room. Treats were provided by the hostesses, Janet Radcliffe and Diane Lang.

The meeting was called to order by President Therese Payne. The opening prayer was given by Lila Reekie. Roll call was answered by 11 members and one guest, Brenda Wigger, sharing their favorite springtime activity.

Thank you notes were received from Colmery-O’Neil Veteran’s Hospital for the Valentine Care Packages, from a student at Eugene Field thanking the club for its donation to the Literature Festival, and from Lisa Bogert for the memorial given in memory of her mother, Beth Gentry.

Virginia Cook made a motion to accept the March 12 minutes as read. Janet seconded the motion, which passed. Cindy Ayers shared the treasurer’s report. Lila made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, which Virginia seconded. Motion passed. A motion was made to offer the guest speaker for the evening $25, and if she didn’t accept the money, the club would donate it to the Willow Domestic Center. Diane seconded the motion, which passed.

Members recognized those with April and May birthdays and those of the club’s two new members, Gerry Coffman and Nancy Baker. Members sang “Happy Birthday” to club president, Therese, whose birthday was on the day of the meeting.

Therese reminded members of the District III meeting April 20 at Calvary Methodist Church in Iola. Therese and Lila are planning to attend the meeting and Barb Engel will send out an email to see if anyone could take JoAnn Duvall’s place at the District III meeting. The club will be taking nut cups, table decorations, two door prizes and a basket for Ways and Means.

Early registration for the International Convention in Washington, D.C. is May 1. At the International Convention, Altruistic projects will be voted on: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and a new one, Alzheimer’s Association. The top two vote-getters will be the International Altruistic projects for the 2013-2015 biennium. There are also some active membership changes to be voted on.

Membership Chairman, Liz Smith, and President Therese Payne presided over the Pledge Ceremony for Nancy Baker and the Initiation Ceremony of Gerry Coffman and Nancy Baker.

The club’s next meeting will be June 11, hosted by Barb Engel and Virginia Cook. Members will meet in Williamsburg at 10 a.m. to tour the Williamsburg area Quilt Barns, then eat and have the meeting. The program will be planning meetings for the coming year.

Virginia received a candle for winning the door prize. The meeting closed with the singing of “The Lamp of ADK.”

For the program, the speaker was Patricia Dalton-Graham, a local author from Garnett. She shared highlights from her book, “Isabella: A Pioneer Battered Wife.”
