Walmart truck drivers earn top honors at state truck driving championship

Several local Walmart truck drivers competed and were recognized for top honors in the 2013 Kansas Professional Truck Driving Championships June 14-15.

The competition consisted of eight classes. Each participant had to complete a vehicle inspection, written test and a six-part driving challenge.

Awards were presented during a banquet.

Local drivers receiving awards included:

• David Knight, Ottawa, first place in Four Ale Van Class.

• Darren Bogart, Ottawa, second place in Five Axle Van Class.

• Bryan Studley, Ottawa, second place in Five Axle Flatbed Class.

• Jeff Davis, Ottawa, first place in Tank Truck Class.

Seven companies contended for the team trophy this year. The top three drivers from each of these companies are stacked up against each other to determine the highest point total for the entire competition. Companies included: Con-way Freight, FedEx Freight, UPS Freight, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Old Dominion, Great Plains Trucking and YRC Freight. The Team Champions award was presented to Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The top place of each class will go on to compete at the National Truck Driving Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Kansas Truck Driving Championships are sponsored by the Kansas Motor Carrier Association and the Kansas Safety Management Council.
