Ottawa University’s Office of Student Affairs recently entered a contest — the 2013 Super Service Challenge sponsored by Companies with a Mission — and won $5,000 for Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, according to the university.

OU students made a video that helped win the donation for Prairie Paws, 3173 K-68, Ottawa, the university said.

The check was presented to the animal shelter Jan. 10.

“Those are the kinds of things that keep this place going,” Asher, Prairie Paws operations manager and deputy director, said. “They didn’t tell us they were doing it. It was nice they did something like that for Prairie Paws.”

The university students’ relationship with Prairie Paws pre-dates Asher’s time with the shelter, he said.

“We have a good working relationship with them so it will be nice to continue that,” he said. “For the three years the new shelter’s been here, OU students have been coming out to volunteer and since I’ve been here — we had some [Monday] that came out — and come on a regular basis that walk animals and help where we need help. They’re more than willing to do anything we need them to do, and we certainly appreciate their help.”

The $5,000 donation is expected to go toward taking care of the animals in some form or another, Asher said.

“It’ll be used for the general care of the animals,” he said. “A lot of times we need extra money for medical care. It was a surprise to us and a great surprise. It will go a long way to help our animals.”
