A new dentist is bringing his brand of high-end dentistry to Ottawa.

Dr. Michael Kemmling, Shawnee, recently joined Dr. Steven Thompson’s Ottawa Kansas Dentistry practice, 1334 S. Main St., Ottawa, Thompson said.

“I wanted to have some new strengths in newer technologies,” Thompson said. “[Kemmling] brings some strengths to the practice that I had abandoned. He has strengths in root canals, oral surgery, minor orthodontics and new technologies.”

Kemmling has his own practice in Shawnee, Capstone Dentistry, with newer, different technology, Thompson said.

“There is a phase of dentistry that is taking over the profession, and it involves taking impressions of teeth with digital scans,” Thompson said. “It’s a high-end technology and the equipment is expensive and [Kemmling] is presently working with that technology out of his office in Kansas City in Shawnee.”

Thompson likes the youthfulness Kemmling brings to the practice and Kemmling likes the hometown feel Ottawa offers, Kemmling said.

“Ottawa doesn’t have that dental specialty around, so it allows us to do procedures people would be driving to Lawrence for,” Kemmling said. “I’ve been a fan of small-town living and Ottawa brings that small-town feel to it.”

Though not originally from Kansas City, Kemmling moved to Kansas in 2000 and earned his degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he said.

Kemmling will be doing comprehensive dentistry, Thompson said, like fillings, crowns, extractions, root canals, surgery, orthodontics and diagnostic medicine.

He currently practices at Ottawa Kansas Dentistry throughout the week, Kemmling said, but will be setting a more specific schedule soon.
