WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Police Department has an interim leader.

The Wellsville City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to appoint Sgt. John Blair, with the Wellsville Police Department, as interim police chief until the position can be filled. The council set Blair’s annual salary at $45,000.

Blair takes the reins after Steve Gillespie, former Wellsville police chief, recently accepted a position with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in the agency’s Overland Park office, Wellsville city and police officials said.

Blair has been with the Wellsville department for four years and before that he was a sergeant with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years and a deputy at the Miami County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years, he said Monday.

“I am pleased at the opportunity [given to me] by the council and the mayor,” Blair said Friday. “I am going to await further instruction on what happens next.”

At its meeting Wednesday, the city council did not set a timetable for hiring a police chief.
