Wintry weather sends motorists sliding off roads
By The Herald Staff | 1/31/2014
Reports of multiple rollovers and injury wrecks started coming in about 3 p.m. Friday to the Franklin County emergency dispatch center in Ottawa as weather conditions deteriorated across the county.
Patrol units with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa Police Department were dispatched to multiple slide-offs and a couple of rollover wrecks on I-35 in Franklin County as a layer of ice made driving treacherous for motorists in the region.
Reports of multiple injuries from the wrecks also came into the 911 dispatch center, including one wreck that required the driver and passengers to be extricated from the vehicle on I-35 at milepost 188 near Ottawa. A two-vehicle injury wreck also was reported about 3:40 p.m. at Wilson and North Cherry streets in Ottawa.
The extent of the injuries from the multiple wrecks across the county was unknown late Friday afternoon.
Sporting events for Ottawa and other area high schools were canceled because of the weather conditions.
