TOPEKA — A Garnett lottery player got more than she expected recently when she arrived at the headquarters of the Kansas Lottery to claim her prize.

Sherry Benjamin, 66, was attempting to collect $2,000 on a $2 Double Bonus Crossword ticket from the Topeka headquarters when she received some lucky news.

“When I got there, I was really surprised to find out that I had actually won $20,000!” Benjamin said. “I miscounted the number of words I’d scratched off. I thought I had nine, but instead I had 10.”

She was glad she didn’t know the true amount of the prize before claiming the ticket, she said.

“Or else I’m sure I wouldn’t have slept at all last night,” she said.

Benjamin, the owner of Benjamin Realty in Garnett, told Lottery officials she is a frequent player of Bonus Crossword scratch tickets, and typically stops on her way home from work to pick one up. Still “recovering” from her unexpected $20,000 win, she said she had no plans yet for the prize money, and for now will just keep it in the bank.

She purchased her $20,000 ticket at Casey’s General Store 1336, 219 W. Park Road, Garnett.
