Pastors, laity workshops set for OU campus

By The Herald Staff | 3/31/2014

A veteran pastor who has served in leadership roles with several Baptist-affiliated organizations will be the headline speaker at Ottawa University’s Norwood Jones Convocation Series to take place in conjunction with the fourth annual Pastors and Laity Conference April 9-10 at Fredrikson Chapel on the OU campus, 1001 S. Cedar St., Ottawa.

The free two-day event is open to the public, though registration is encouraged at www.ottawa.edu/norwoodjones.

“Leading by Example” is the theme of the dual event, which is set to feature the Rev. Jacquline L. Saxon, who will present the convocation, “In Search of the Peaceable Kingdom,” 7:30 p.m. April 9.

A series of workshops and presentations for pastors and laity are planned throughout the two-day event, according to an Ottawa University news release. Group sessions, question-and-answer sessions, praise and worship, and fellowship times also are scheduled.

Saxon is vice president for Student Affairs and Vocation for Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas. She has held leadership roles with American Baptist Churches, USA; National Youth Gatherings; the American Baptist GIRLS; the American Baptist Campus Ministries Association, and the American Baptist Black Caucus, the news release said. She currently is the convener for the American Baptist Women in Ministry Advisory Board and a member of the American Baptist Ministers Council, the release said.

Her previous student leadership as president of the Newman Center at Howard University has led to a continuing approach to interdenominational leadership as she works with congregations as a presenter throughout the U.S., according to the news release.

Saxon served as the associate pastor of University Baptist Church from 1998 to 2006 in Austin, finishing her Master of Divinity degree in 2000, the release said. Before attending seminary, she was an advisory financial analyst with IBM for 12 years in New York state and Austin and has been an ordained American Baptist Church, USA pastor since 2001, the release said.
