Ottawa narrows in on new school superintendent

A trio of superintendent candidates is scheduled to be in Ottawa later this month to interview for the Ottawa school district’s top administrative position.

The day-long interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 and April 30. The public is invited to attend a reception for each candidate from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on those three dates in the board of education room at the school district office, 1404 S. Ash St., Ottawa.

On the advice of the superintendent search team with the Topeka-based Kansas Association of School Boards, the school district has opted not to release the three candidates’ names in advance, Brian Kraus, interim superintendent of Ottawa schools, said Wednesday.

The itinerary for the three interviews has the candidates scheduled to be in the community from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to meet with the school board, tour the district’s facilities, meet with teachers, administrators and others, Teresa Powers, board clerk, said.

The school board is seeking a successor for former Superintendent Dean Katt, who resigned March 1. Katt will remain on the school district payroll through Oct. 31 as a consultant.

Bill Majors, with the KASB search team, presented a list of “fully vetted” finalists to the school board Monday night. Board members and Majors met for 50 minutes in executive session to review the applicants, with the board deciding to bring in three of those finalists for on-site interviews.

KASB representatives have said during recent discussions with the school board that protocol is to not release candidates’ names in advance, so they have an opportunity themselves to let their school boards know they are among the finalists for another position, or do not create undue alarm among their board members if they opt to back out of the interview.
