Students sing, play their way to state contest

Several Ottawa High School students hit the right notes at the KMEA state music competition.

Courtney Houston, junior at Ottawa High School, received a 1 rating at the regional music festival at Baker University and qualified for the State Piano Festival Feb. 22 at Wichita State University. She received a 2 rating there.

Houston also auditioned for the Northeast District choir as a Soprano 1 and was selected. She also was selected for the selected for the KMEA State Honor Choir as a Soprano 1. While rehearsing for the KMEA State Honor Choir concert she was one of the two sopranos selected to sing in an octet for one of the songs performed by the KMEA State Honor Choir.

Junior Jonathan Branson auditioned and was selected for KMEA State Honor Band on the trumpet.

Megan Cubbison, freshman, auditioned and was selected to perform in the KMEA Middle Level State Honor Choir. This choir is for seventh- through ninth-grade students who have been selected.

Sophomore Aubrey Curry auditioned for the Northeast District choir as a Soprano 2 and was selected. She also was selected to be an alternate for the KMEA State Honor Choir as a Soprano 2. She notified that she would be performing and participated in the KMEA State Honor Choir as a Soprano 2.

The mentioned students traveled to Wichita Feb. 27, where they participated in an intense rehearsal within their various band or choirs on Thursday afternoon, Thursday evening and Friday. The KMEW Middle Level choir presented its concert Friday afternoon, and the KMEA State Honor Bands and Honor Choir presented their various concerts on Saturday afternoon.

The competition for the Honor Choirs involves all schools 1A through 6A. The competition for the Honor band is split between 1A through 4A and 5A through 6A.
