Wal-Mart drivers earn state accolades

Four Ottawa truck drivers with Wal-Mart Transportation LLC were awarded Drivers of the Month, as well as one awarded Driver of the Year, by the Kansas Motor Carrier Association April 23 in Topeka.

Samuel Harter, Ottawa, earned the Driver of the Year for 2014 designation for his long service as a driver and clean driving history. Harter logged more than 4 million miles during his 45-year, accident-free career.

Along with Harter, Wal-Mart Transportation LLC drivers Stan Giza, Todd Sarver and Jim Sullivan were awarded Drivers of the Month with eight other drivers from across the state. The group of drivers represent 333 years of experience and more than 27 million miles of safe driving during their careers.

Wal-Mart Transportation LLC was recognized as one of the 23 fleets to be honored for safe driving in the state. The fleets accumulated 170 million miles traveled on Kansas highways in 2013 with an accident ratio of 0.39 per million miles.

Sterling Farber, Wal-Mart Transportation LLC, also was awarded Safety Professional of the Year for 2014 for making an impact on safety in the trucking industry through his work. KCMA also introduced a new Kansas Road Team, which included Don Kendall, Wal-Mart Transportation LLC, among others.

Winners were selected by a panel of judges from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Corporation Commission and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
