The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a body found Monday in a rural area west of Ottawa.
The sheriff’s office received a call about 12:20 p.m. Monday about the body, which was located at 3197 Georgia Road, Ottawa, Jeff Richards, Franklin County sheriff, said. Because of the suspicious nature of the discovery, the sheriff’s office is investigating the incident as a possible crime, Richards said. Law enforcement would not say whether the body was that of a man or woman, and further details about the incident and the body's identity were not immediately available.
The Franklin County Emergency Response Unit’s mobile vehicle was on the scene Monday afternoon, as were members of the sheriff’s office and Kansas Highway Patrol. At least one helicopter was in the area.
“Right now we’re working on getting search warrants and getting in our other additional resources to do the search,” Richards said.
A press conference was scheduled for 9 p.m. Monday at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, 305 S. Main St., Ottawa, Richards said.
“Hopefully we’ll have more information at that time,” he said.
