A three-mile stretch of southbound U.S. 59, south of Lawrence, will be closed for the next several hours while the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office conducts an investigation into a shooting that took place on the highway about 11 p.m. Monday.
The highway will be closed to southbound traffic from N 1000 Road (westbound Douglas County Road 458) to the N 650 Road exit for several hours, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office news release issued about 2:15 p.m. today. Traffic will be rerouted to Old U.S. 59.
Deputies are searching the area for evidence related to the shooting of a 24-year-old Lawrence man, who sustained gunshot wounds while driving in that area last night. The victim was taken by air ambulance to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka, where he was recuperating today from his wounds, the release said.
The sheriff’s office has no information at this time about suspects or a vehicle involved in the shooting, the release said.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at (785) 841-0007 or call Douglas County Crime Stoppers at (785) 843-8477.
