A second suspect has been arrested in the Memorial Day shooting on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence.
Douglas County sheriff’s detectives arrested Brittany Nicole Smith, 20, Eudora, Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder in the first degree and conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree in connection with the shooting of a 24-year-old Lawrence man about 11 p.m. May 26 as he drove on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
On Monday night, sheriff’s detectives arrested Edward Joseph “E.J.” Parker on suspicion of shooting Skylar L. Workman. Workman was flown by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka to be treated for gunshot wounds.
With Smith’s arrest, authorities upgraded the charges against Parker from attempted murder in the second degree to attempted murder in the first degree and conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree. Smith and Parker are both being held in Douglas County jail awaiting their first court appearance. No bond has been set for either suspect, authorities said.
Workman continues to recover from his wounds in an area hospital, the sheriff’s news release said.
