County leaders had new equipment on their minds this week.

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners Wednesday approved two bids to purchase equipment, while also giving the OK on a bid to finance a payment for one of the newly purchased equipment.

A bid from Foley Equipment, Topeka, for a 2014 Caterpillar 12M2 motor grader for the price of $131,800 was approved, as well as a motion to solicit bids from Franklin County banks and Caterpillar Finance to help finance the purchase.

Commissioners then opened a single bid from Midwest Striping Co., Wichita, for a pavement marking project at the price of $35,736.10. The board quickly approved the bid and awarded the project to Midwest Striping. Commissioners typically table bids for further discussion at a later time, Steve Harris, board chair, said, but because only one bid was submitted, the board decided to award the project immediately.

The county’s budget allows for $40,000 to be spent on the project, Jim Haag, public works director, said, so the bid was within the allocated money for the project.

The board also set a public hearing to discuss the planned county budget for Aug. 6.
