104 ‘proud’ Republicans back Davis bid

By The Herald Staff | 7/16/2014

TOPEKA — Kansas can do better, Democrat Paul Davis said Tuesday, and more than a 100 prominent Republicans agree with him in his bid to unseat Gov. Sam Brownback.

“All of us are proud Republicans. We came together because of our common love of Kansas, our commitment to Kansas families, and our belief in moderate, commonsense leadership,” Wint Winter, former Ottawan and former state senator from Douglas County, said. “We are deeply concerned by the direction Sam Brownback is taking Kansas. Today we announce our opposition to his re-election. And to pledge our voices, our energy and our votes to Paul Davis and Jill Docking — our choice for governor and lieutenant governor of Kansas.”

Davis, Lawrence, Kansas House minority leader, released this week a list of endorsements for his gubernatorial campaign from 104 Republicans who served or are serving in public office — from the federal level to the local level. Davis called the cross-party support “an unprecendented move.”

In announcing the support of the “Republicans for Kansas Values” group, Davis said a better future for Kansas is in reach.

“We can have better schools and a stronger economy,” he said. “The values that unite us as Kansans are much bigger than the partisanship and experiment of Sam Brownback. Through hard work and cooperation, we can restore Kansas together.”

The group pointed to Brownback’s tax plan, previous cuts to school funding, and budgeting as reasons for their decision to support Davis. They also praised the Democrat candidate, calling him a moderate and commonsense leader and said he focuses on “proven solutions.”

“This election should not be about electing a Republican or a Democrat as Governor. It must be about electing a moderate, commonsense Kansan as governor,” Dick Bond, former Kansas Senate president, said. “I have been a Republican all my life and don’t intend to change. But I am proud today to support Paul Davis and Jill Docking for Kansas’ sake.”
