Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is scheduled to speak during a Franklin County Republican Central Committee event 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, 301 S. Hickory St., a leader of the committee confirmed.

“We’re very excited,” Cathy McClay, vice chair of the committee, said. “[Huckabee] is just a real wholesome person and down to earth. He comes across to common people — to all people. And his shows are becoming increasingly popular. ... It seemed like a good fit for people in the area.”

Huckabee easily captured the 2008 Kansas Republican Caucuses, winning 60 percent of the vote en route to an unsuccessful bid to become the Republican party’s presidential nominee. A former Southern Baptist minister, Huckabee now is a political commentator and hosts the Fox News Channel talk show “Huckabee.”

While she’s unsure of the nature of Huckabee’s November appearance in Ottawa, McClay said the event likely will span an array of topics. McClay added that Huckabee is the most prominent political figure to attend a central committee event.

Seats — of which there are about 850 at the auditorium — cost $50, $75 and $100 each and tickets go on sale Sept. 1. A variety of sponsorship packages, ranging between $250 and $1,000, are available for the event and must be purchased before Aug. 1, McClay said.
