ELECTION RESULTS: Richards easily nabs victory in sheriff's race
By The Herald Staff | 8/5/2014
After being appointed to the position in spring 2013, Jeff Richards now has earned the Franklin County sheriff position by popular vote.
Richards was victorious Tuesday night over challenger Michael Reed, a former Wellsville police chief and county sheriff’s office detective, in the Republican primary.
Because there is no Democrat running for the position, Richards likely will be unopposed in the general election.
Richards, Ottawa, received 2,391 votes in the primary; Reed, Wellsville, trailed at 946 votes, with 23 of 23 precincts reporting, according to an unofficial vote count by the Franklin County Clerk’s Office.
All totals are unofficial until the votes are canvassed Aug. 15 in the courtroom at the Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main St., Ottawa.
Richards has served as sheriff since April 2013. He previously served as an Overland Park police detective and in the U.S. Air Force.
