Election night produces winners amid low voter turnout (OVERALL RESULTS)

By The Herald Staff | 8/5/2014

It was a typical primary showing Tuesday at the polls in Franklin County, with about a quarter of registered voters choosing who will lead the county and state in the coming years.

Only 4,014 ballots were cast in the primary election, which saw the strongest turnout among Republican voters (about 41 percent went to the polls) — not a surprise since Franklin County Democrats only faced one contested race: Chad Taylor versus Patrick Wiesner for their party’s nomination for U.S. Senate. Of the ballots cast, 3,457 were Republicans; 553 Democrats; and 497 nonpartisan, according to the Franklin County Clerk’s Office.

All totals are unofficial until the votes are canvassed Aug. 15 in the courtroom at the Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main St., Ottawa.

With 17,267 registered voters in the county, turnout was estimated at only 23.25 percent.

Tuesday’s 4,014 votes compare to 3,777 in 2010 and 5,332 in 2012, according to the clerk’s office.
