Authorities continued to investigate late Friday night a shooting earlier in the evening that injured at least one person on I-35 near Gardner.
A motorist was traveling southbound about 7:30 p.m. Friday night on I-35, just south of Edgerton Road, when a “random gunshot” struck the victim, Mike Talcott, sergeant with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department, said.
“(The person) was taken to an area hospital, and it’s currently under investigation,” Talcott said late Friday night.
Franklin County Emergency Medical Services transported one patient to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, reportedly with a lower leg injury, according to media reports.
Authorities shut down both lanes of traffic for several hours because of the incident while continuing to look for the person or persons involved.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene, Sheriff Jeff Richards said, as well as the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, which had taken the lead in the investigation.
“Basically what we’re doing is assisting Miami County in whatever they need us to do right now,” Richards said late Friday night. “It’s still a very, very active scene.”
