The Ottawa University volleyball team is joining forces this weekend with Children’s Mercy Hospitals of Kansas City for a special event aimed at fundraising and pediatric cancer awareness.

The squad’s third annual “Dig Gold” volleyball match is set for 1 p.m. Saturday against Sterling College at OU’s Mabee Building, 1021 College Lane, Ottawa.

“September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and gold is the color designated to represent pediatric cancer,” Tom Symons, OU head volleyball coach, said.

A silent auction featuring more than 30 items — including Chiefs, Royals and Sporting KC tickets, among others — is planned. All proceeds are to be given to the pediatric oncology/hematology unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Symons said.

“This is the only ‘Dig Gold’ event in the country (that we know of) and feel very proud and fortunate to be associated and help such a worthy cause,” Symons said. “Our motto is ‘Fight Now, So Kids Do Not Have To.’ With your help, we can continue the research and treatment that makes a difference to so many.”
