US 56 reopens near Baldwin City

Three bridge replacement projects spanning months of construction in Douglas County have been completed with U.S. 56 now reopened to traffic.
The bridgework, just west of Baldwin City, caused long-standing congestion and detours for motorists unsuccessfully trying to make their ways west on U.S. 56 to the junction with U.S. 59.
“Crews still have some minor cleanup and finishing work to complete on the project, but the bridges are completed and U.S. 56 is fully open to all traffic,” a press release from the Kansas Department of Transportation said Friday. “Thank you for your patience during construction and we hope you enjoy the drive across all three of these new U.S. 56 bridges.”
