Former Republican targets Kobach

WICHITA — A former GOP leader in the Kansas Senate has announced plans to challenge Kris Kobach for secretary of state in 2014.

Jean Schodorf, Wichita, a former moderate Republican who served as Majority Whip in the Senate before a 2012 election defeat lead by conservative Republicans ended her 12-year stint at the Statehouse, filed for office this week, saying she would run as a Democrat.

Incumbent Secretary of State Kobach has been criticized for his focus on gun rights, immigration and voter fraud, as well as his maintaining a private legal career and writing controversial legislation for other states.

“Kansans deserve a secretary of state who will protect our right to vote, not undermine Kansas voters,” Jason Perkey, Kansas Democratic Party executive director, said after Schodorf’s candidacy was announced.

Schodorf, who switched parties in January, previously ran for higher office in 2010 when she unsuccessfully challenged Mike Pompeo, Wichita, for the 4th District U.S Representative position vacated by Todd Tiahrt.
