High school band students trumpet wins at state festival

ANDOVER — Ottawa High School’s band raked in honors for its solo and ensemble performances at the Kansas High School Athletics and Activities 4A State Solo and Ensemble Festival Saturday at Andover High School, according to a news release from Lori Underwood, vocal instructor, and Courtney Williams, band instructor.

All Ottawa students received an “outstanding” or “excellent” rating at the state festival.

ANDOVER — Ottawa High School’s band raked in honors for its solo and ensemble performances at the Kansas High School Athletics and Activities 4A State Solo and Ensemble Festival Saturday at Andover High School, according to a news release from Lori Underwood, vocal instructor, and Courtney Williams, band instructor.

All Ottawa students received an “outstanding” or “excellent” rating at the state festival.

“This was one of the strongest showings of musicianship that we’ve had here at OHS,” Williams said in the release. “Each performer was an excellent representative of Ottawa High School.”

Those earning I (outstanding) ratings included: Janelle Sharp, trumpet solo; Jonathan Branson, trumpet solo; Kinley Jorgensen, violin solo; Katie Wooge, vocal solo; Courtney Houston, violin solo, french horn solo and vocal solo; Colin Cowdin, tenor sax solo; Carter McCullough, violin solo; Jonathan Kuczmarski, bass clarinet solo; Aubrey Curry, vocal solo; Rebecca Vrbas, vocal solo; violin trio (Hannah Heatherman, Kinley Jorgensen, Carter McCullough).

Those earning II (excellent) ratings included: Jesse Bentz, vocal solo; Carter McCullough, alto sax solo; Hannah Heatherman, violin solo; Abagael Pruitt, trombone solo; trumpet trio (Jonathan Branson, Colton Leadbetter, Janelle Sharp).
