DR. H. WILLIAM MYERS
Dr. H. William Myers, 95, Ottawa, Kan., died Jan. 8, 2014, at Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Richmond, Kan.
A visitation for Dr. Myers is planned for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa, Kan. Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, Ottawa, Kan. Burial is planned for 2:30 p.m. at Parklawn Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born April 2, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Howard Myers and Ella (Menanin) Sprague.
He married Alice Millard July 4, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo. They were married for 68 years.
Dr. Myers was a professor of sociology at Ottawa University for 31 years. He loved his students and was the sponsor of the Ottawa University Class of 1958 and in 2008 was named an honorary member of the Class of 1958.
Before coming to Ottawa, Dr. Myers taught at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Dr. Myers received many degrees as a student, including a B.A. from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., a B.D. from Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Conn., a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity School and also his P.h.D. from Yale University Graduate School. Dr. Myers served as a graduate teaching assistant at Yale Divinity School for eight years. Special awards presented to Dr. Myers from Danforth Foundation include teacher study grant, associate program and associate selection committee.
After retiring in 1986, Dr. Myers worked at the Ottawa Library, volunteered at Ransom Memorial Hospital, and also was a part of a Grandparent Mentoring program for elementary children. Dr. Myers was a member of the First Baptist Church and Franklin County Democrats, as well as the Ottawa Country Club.
A devoted husband and loving family man, Dr. Myers loved to vacation in Vermont with Alice. Always very well presented, he loved nature, to read, do crosswords, tell jokes, play golf and was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Dr. Myers was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, Oct. 7, 2007.
Survivors include his brother, Robert Sprague, Houston, Texas; daughter, Gweneth Nance, Ottawa, Kan.; son, Christopher Myers, New Carlisle, Ohio; three grandchildren, Wendy Rea and husband, Jeff, Ottawa, Kan., Cathy Harleman and husband, David, Franklin, Ohio, and Scott Nance and wife, Jennifer, Kansas City, Kan.; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
