Carl Keith Gifford, 87, Waverly, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Newman Regional Health, Emporia, Kan.

Services are planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Bethany Church of Christ, east of Waverly on Highway 31 and Verdure Road. Family members are set to receive friends 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial is to be in the Cherry Mound Cemetery, north of Westphalia.

Keith was born Dec. 4, 1926, in rural Westphalia, Kan., the son of Carl B. and Roberta Faye Cunningham Gifford.

Keith graduated from Waverly High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a lifelong farmer since 1946.

He was a member and an elder of the Bethany Church of Christ, Waverly. He also was a member of the Hull-Cromwell Post No. 119 of the American Legion.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Keith married Zelda Reekie Oct. 20, 1951, in Ottawa, Kan. To this union, six children were born.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Wanda Saile; a great-granddaughter, Zoe MaeLe Ritchal; two brothers, Robert L. and Forrest W. Gifford; and a sister, Laura May Bukovatz.

Survivors include his wife, Zelda, of the home; three sons, Chris (Elaine) Gifford, Waverly, Dale (Sandy) Gifford, Waverly, and Harry (Michelle) Gifford, Independence; two daughters, Donna (Owen) Ritchal, McCune, and Karen (Doug) Piper, Waverly; a son-in-law, David Saile, Topeka; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Coffey County Cancer Support Group or the Bethany Church of Christ through Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington KS 66839.
