Evelyn J. Horne, 82, Ottawa, Kan., passed away Feb. 9, 2014, at Ottawa Retirement Village, Ottawa, Kan.

Inurnment services are planned for 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Highland Cemetery.

Evelyn was born Jan. 8, 1932, in Osage City, Kan., the daughter of Arley C. and Winona M. (Branning) Shirley.

She grew up and attended school in Osage City, Kan. Evelyn moved to Ottawa in 1950.

She worked as a waitress for the North American Hotel, as a cook for Pence’s Deli and Hill Top Café, and as a teacher for Head Start, retiring in June of 1975.

 Evelyn, a Cub Scout Master, enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She spent time bowling, fishing at Baldwin Lake, and gardening. She was a member of the Cherry Street Wesleyan Church in Ottawa, Kan.

Evelyn was united in marriage with Norman J. Horne Dec. 7, 1951, in Lyndon, Kan. Norman preceded her in death Feb. 11, 2010.

Evelyn also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clinton C. Shirley and Emery Gene Shirley; son-in-law, Randy Leal; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include seven children, Phyllis Johnson, Ottawa, Kan., Janet Miner, and husband, John, Anaheim, Calif., Joe Horne, and wife, Lora, Pomona, Kan., Daniel Horne, and wife, Carolyn, Vassar, Kan., Connie Leal, Americus, Kan., Kathy Kaub, and husband David, Ottawa, Kan., and Michael Horne, and wife, Robin, Ottawa; her sister, Dixie Mistele, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; 23 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation through Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa KS 66067.
