William R. “Bill” Gilbert Sr., 74, Pomona, died Saturday, May 4, 2013.

Graveside services are planned for 11 a.m. today, May 9, 2013, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona. Friends were to pay their respects to Mr. Gilbert 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and up until the service hour Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family planned to meet with friends 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. today before the graveside service. Interment was set for Woodlawn Cemetery.

He was born Thursday, Feb. 23, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of William and Annie (DeMoss) Gilbert Jr. II.

He was a near-lifelong Ottawa, Kan., resident. He also lived in Quenemo and Effingham, Kan.     

Bill was united in marriage with Earlene Kay Postlethwaite May 12, 1962, in Oklahoma. She preceded him in death Jan. 1, 2004.

He worked for Yellow Freight as a truck driver for 30 years. He also owned and operated a restaurant in Effingham.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of the Living Way Apostolic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Falk, Kansas City, Kan.; sons, William Gilbert, Quenemo, and James Gilbert, Melvern; brother, Jack Gilbert; sister, Chris Jones; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Gilbert Jr. II; wife, Earlene Gilbert; daughter, Deborah Hill; and sister, Judy Cummings.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Living Way Apostolic Church through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
