William Gerald Slemp, 67, Ottawa, died Sept. 1, 2013, at Richmond Care Center.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa. Burial is set for a later date at Roselawn Cemetery. Mr. Slemp’s family plans to receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 4, 1945, in Orange, Calif., the son Gerald William Slemp and Grace (Cox) Slemp.

He moved with his family to Kansas in 1950 and graduated from Gardner High School, Gardner, Kan., with the class of 1963, later moving to Ottawa and living there most of his adult life.

He also served his country in the U.S. Navy for six years.

William was a railway car repairman and engineer for Santa Fe Railroad for more than 20 years, retiring in 1990.

He attended New Life in Christ Church of Ottawa.

William was united in marriage with Norma Payne Oct. 21, 1973, at the Cherry Street Wesleyan Church, Ottawa. They shared 39 years of loving marriage.  Norma survives of their home.

Other survivors include two sons, Jason William Slemp, Burlington, Kan., and Daniel Lee Slemp, Ottawa; two sisters, Diane Slemp, Arkansas, and Charlotte Slemp, Arkansas; and two brothers, Dale Slemp, Ottawa, and Darrell Slemp, Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Melissa Lyn Slemp; and one brother, Melvin Lee Slemp.
