Pit bull fear mongering

1/3/2014

[The following is in response to a Dec. 18 letter in The Herald’s Reader Forum that discussed the City of Ottawa’s breed-specific pit bull ban.]

I wish to record my very strong objection to David Lee's blatant ignorance in his letter.

I wish to record my very strong objection to David Lee's blatant ignorance in his letter.

I’m going into my 24th year as a dog trainer specializing in the very worst of the worst (ie. former fighting dogs, highly abused and neglected dogs, over bred, tethered for long periods and dogs that have been ignored). I can confidently state that a mere 5 percent of a dog’s disposition is dictated by breed while 95 percent is dominated by environmental influence. Ignorant, ill-qualified, irresponsible owners have everything to do with a dog’s experience, socialization, degree and range of exercise and stimuli, etc. or lack thereof.

You attempt to sensationalize pit bulls into the category of a wild animal when in fact pit bulls are a group of domestic dog breeds. No amount of your fear mongering or vilification of the breed(s) will ever change that fact.

You just keep on believing that government is upstanding and has integrity ... and that the media establishment is actually a credible source of factual information. The rest of us are moving on with the 21st century.
