Setting the record straight on gun stance

1/8/2014

This letter is in response to Tuesday’s article in The Ottawa Herald concerning the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Coffee Saturday morning. In that story, I was alleged to have said that the state needed more gun control and more mental health funding. The story’s writer was only half right.

I have never said the state needs more gun control, nor would I. My voting record and my public statements show strong support for our Second Amendment freedoms. In fact, I am endorsed by the National Rifle Association and received the organization’s “A” rating. As a gun owner and recreational shooter, I take pride in exercising those freedoms in a safe and responsible manner.

As a legislator, I realize that some people will abuse the freedoms we possess. We have seen that happen tragically in many instances around our nation. Those who commit these heinous acts should be dealt with in our justice system. However, the actions of those who break the law are not a justification to restrict or infringe upon the liberties of those who exercise their rights peacefully and lawfully.

We all make mistakes and I thank the Herald’s staff for apologizing for their error and running a correction in this matter. If you ever have a question about where I stand on an issue or a concern about state policy, please contact me at blaine.finch@house.ks.gov or blainefinch@gmail.com

Thank you for the opportunity and honor of being your representative in Topeka.
