Are Huckabee’s remarks on women serious? Or a joke?

1/29/2014

Dear Mike Huckabee: We’ve heard that you have a great sense of humor and are a lot of fun to be around. We know, therefore, that you were joking last week when you said, “If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are hopeless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them with their prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it,”

Unfortunately, some of us, and a lot of women, just have no sense of humor. We didn’t get the joke.

Maybe it was supposed to be funny because you were emphasizing the reverse, a tried-and-true humor technique. Most medical insurance plans have covered Viagra and Cialis and other erectile dysfunction drugs since the beginning, unlike birth control pills. In a sense, that is men controlling their libido, or certainly helping it along. Perhaps women aren’t supposed to have a libido? But then we hear of men complaining bitterly when their partners are low in the sex-drive department. Do you find that paradox funny, too?

Maybe it was supposed to be funny because you were, unkindly, mocking people without a basic understanding of biology. Surely, you know that it takes both a man and woman to operate the reproductive system. And frankly, that has been of more concern to women than to many men. Some men, in fact, disavow any responsibility for engaging a woman’s reproductive system. In that case, the only responsible thing for a woman to do is take control. Not to do so would, indeed, make her hopeless.

We hope that when you speak next week at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce dinner that your jokes are of a better quality.

Because, Mr. Huckabee, surely you can’t be serious.
