ASK THE EBAY QUEEN: Do I have to accept this bossy eBay return?

By SUZIE EADS, Ask the eBay Queen | 3/7/2013

Dear eBay Queen: I was going to write you way back in May 2012 to tell you about a buyer I had who was making me crazy, but I never got around to it. Today, nine months later, I want to share with you and your readers what happened. When I got home from running errands today, I noticed that there was a “We Missed You” note from the post office, telling me they had a package for me that needed a signature. I thought that was pretty weird because I couldn’t think of anything I recently purchased. I went to pick up the package, and as soon as I saw who it was from, I immediately started laughing. I didn’t even need to open it — I knew exactly what was inside. It was an eBay item from way back in May, whose return was not authorized by me. Let’s start at the beginning:

In late May 2012, I had a buyer on eBay purchase an authentic Team USA jersey made by Nike. He paid and insisted I use Signature Confirmation when I sent it. No big deal, kind of a strange request, but whatever. I shipped within 48 hours and after two days or so he started sending me crazy daily emails like this:

“I sent you $40 by PayPal per our agreement for the White Nike USA soccer jersey size Large. Today is May 28th, and as of yesterday, I still have not seen it in my PO Box. Have you sent it yet? Maybe you forgot. I don’t know. If so, please send it by Signature Confirmation Priority Mail. This way we both know I got it. Nobody but me signs for my stuff at my PO Box, just so you know. Please update me on the situation and give me the tracking number on the signature confirmation. Also, can you get me another jersey like that one, except in white, size large also?”

I emailed him the tracking number, and almost two weeks later I got this:

“The jersey arrived and picked it up yesterday. Unfortunately, it looks like Nike has “downsized” their jerseys a bit. It says same exact measurements as my other Nike jersey (which fits me perfectly). However, the shoulders are too tight, the torso seems a bit small, and the sleeves are way too short. So, I need that same jersey in size extra large (XL) instead. I put the USA jersey on top of my other jersey, and saw it could practically “fit” into that jersey. I know the XL in USA white will fit, so please set one aside for me and I’ll send it back to you, then you send me the right size. The jersey is really nice. Too bad Nike can’t keep their sizing correctly. Not your fault. Oh well, that’s the way the ball bounces, huh? Have a great day, and please advise me that you have set aside an extra large in this USA jersey for me. Thanks.”

I emailed him back and let him know that I did not have an XL, and offered to accept the return once it was sent back. Fast forward 10 months later, and I finally have the item he was supposed to send back months ago. What should I do? He has not contacted me at all in the past 10 months except in the above messages. — Jeffery, Oklahoma City

Dear Jeffery: That is weird. I can’t believe this guy has kept the item for 10 months and just now sent it back. In this situation, you could do a couple of different things:

• Send the item back “Return to Sender” and send your buyer an email letting him know that’s what you plan to do.

• Open the package, make sure the item is in the same condition you sent it in, then accept the return and refund your buyer the money.

He can’t leave you a negative or file a PayPal claim against you. It is totally up to you what you’d like to do.

Strange eBay item of the week: eBay item No. 170758391909. The last “Twilight” movie was released last week on DVD.
