Guess what, patrons?

6/7/2013

I just read the agenda for Monday night’s West Franklin school board meeting. Here is the direct wording under “Action Items” from Dotson Bradbury, West Franklin superintendent.

“I was asked to develop cost estimates, to house all students on the Pomona campus, should the bond issue fail. Listed below are those cost estimates.

“10 Modulars/two classes per unit ($100,000 per unit installed) — $1,000,000; Plumbing WFHS — $150,000; Phones Pomona campus — $125,000; Roofs Pomona campus — $150,000; HVAC’s Pomona campus — $300,000; WFHS gym floors/bleacher — $281,408; Electrical Pomona — $350,000; Food service Pomona — $ 31,000; Windows Pomona — $53,000; Baseball/softball electrical upgrades — $ 35,600; Softball outfield improvements — $19,500; One-to-one initiative, phase II — $ 75,000. Total cost: $2,570,508.”

If I know anything at all, I know this bond issue was defeated by a margin of 1,318 against the bond, and 555 in favor. Doesn’t that show the patrons of this district do not want to close Appanoose and Williamsburg schools? Doesn’t it show they do not want these outgoing board members, along with the other three remaining board members, and the current (and I do mean current) superintendent, spending taxpayer money like it was water running under a bridge to do what the patrons of this district have told them four times now not to do?

Why did we even have a vote on the issue to close these schools and to spend all of this money on one campus, if when it gets voted down, the board and superintendent would just say, “Oh, what the ----, let’s do it anyway?” Just because one person doesn’t get that feather in his cap now, and the outgoing board members are furious that they were defeated, that doesn’t mean they can go against the will of 70 percent of the voters in this district on this issue, and do one last and final thing to hurt our district.

Haven’t we been hurt enough because of these people and the actions they have taken? Please join me and all the rest of the upset patrons at the West Franklin board meeting Monday night. Remember, every patron gets three minutes to talk to the board, so keep it clean, but be prepared to let your feelings be heard.
