Brownback’s GOP insults older Kansans

7/18/2014

Republicans for Kansas Values, a group of more than 100 Kansas Republican officials, endorsed this week the election of Paul Davis and Jill Docking this November. In response, state Rep. J.R. Claeys, R-Salina, used it as an opportunity to attack members of the group and make derogatory comments about older Kansans.

In a tweet, Claeys insulted Kansas seniors by saying the RKV “really raided the nursing home” to find supporters.

This insult and attack demonstrates the type of politics that have become all too common with Sam Brownback’s Republican party. Instead of having a discussion about finding solutions for Kansas, Brownback and his allies attacked us and made insulting comments about older Kansans.

Republicans for Kansas Values calls on Claeys to apologize to Kansas seniors for his insensitive comment. RKV also calls on Brownback to condemn Claeys’ comment.

“I am disappointed J.R. chose to respond this way and ridicule those who came before him,” Charlie Roth, a member of RKV and former state representative from Salina, said. “It does not dignify his office or the Republican Party. Name-calling, mocking and attacks on people limit discussion and are what we are all frustrated with in politics. I think we are ready for someone who thoughtfully listens and understands what public service is. That is why I am supporting Paul Davis for Governor of Kansas.”

Kansans are moderate, common sense people. Kansans respect others – especially their elders in working together to solve problems. These types of hostile, insulting comments have become all too common with the Brownback Republican party.

As of Friday morning, Claeys had neither apologized nor retracted his statement.
