Primary is important

7/25/2014

As the Aug. 5 primary election approaches, a few points should be considered.

Too many people think primaries are unimportant, but that simply gives more weight to the votes of those who do make the effort to go to the polls. In the race for the Republican nomination for House District 59, Blaine Finch is seeking a second term. Rep. Finch, R-Ottawa, has served the people of this district well. He has long experience in his efforts for the community. He is a well-informed lawmaker, able to understand the complexities of proposed legislation, and resulting law.

As a contributing member of Franklin County and Kansas Farm Bureau Associations, as well as the Kansas Livestock Association, I am proud that both of these member-driven organizations have endorsed Finch for re-election through member-funded political action committees.

I served for many years (in the past century) as vice chairman of the Franklin County Republican Central Committee, alongside several dedicated chairmen. Neutrality toward candidates until after the primary was the ethical rule. I can’t recall any of the chairmen I worked with filing against one of our Republican incumbents or candidates. I am puzzled why the present chairman of the central committee, Bob Fluke, felt it appropriate to file and run against Finch. The Republican central committee should immediately receive his resignation and elect a new chairman.
