CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL: Family dog saves family hamster

By AMY NEWMARK, Chicken Soup for the Soul | 7/28/2014

Skeeter was a natural hunter. The Blue Heeler enthusiastically pounced on the shrews in the yard whenever he got the chance. So, when Kelsey Kate Bankert’s hamster, Quincy, went missing, the family might have been concerned about what would happen if Skeeter found him. There was no need to be, as Kelsey reported in her story “The Rescue,” published in our book about surprising things our dogs do.

When Kelsey and her family returned home and found Quincy’s cage empty, she was surprised by how upset they were. Skeeter seemed to notice as she wound her way in and out between their legs. For several days Kelsey expected to find Quincy injured or lifeless in some nook of the house, but he seemed to have vanished entirely.

By the fourth night, when there appeared to be little hope of finding him, the family settled in to watch a movie, Skeeter at their side. At some point, Skeeter slipped away. When he returned, Kelsey saw there was something in his mouth that looked like a fuzzy chew toy. When Skeeter dropped the object into her lap, she realized it was Quincy, alive and well.

Somehow, it seemed that Skeeter had known that this particular rodent shouldn’t be trapped and killed. The rescue confirmed for Kelsey what she already knew: that Skeeter was part of the family. Skeeter, for her part, “knew that, as a member of the family, she should help bring [Quincy] back,” Kelsey wrote.
