COBBS: 2016: Welcome back for another great year

By DR. RYAN COBBS, Ottawa High School | 7/28/2014

It’s that time of year again: School is right around the corner.

A number of changes are planned this year at Ottawa High School, and with enrollment coming next week I wanted to make sure information about those changes is in your hands.

It’s that time of year again: School is right around the corner.

A number of changes are planned this year at Ottawa High School, and with enrollment coming next week I wanted to make sure information about those changes is in your hands.

Enrollment dates

Ottawa High School and its umbrella schools begin the enrollment process with incoming seniors 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 6, in the Cyclone Room at OHS, 1120 S. Ash St. Juniors follow 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, with sophomores enrolling 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 7 and incoming freshman 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 7. Open enrollment for students and families unable to attend those designated times is set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 7. Enrollment for those students transferring from other schools to OHS may enroll 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 in the high school office. A flat text book fee of $150 is due at enrollment.

Enrollment for the Ottawa Virtual Learning Program is set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Ottawa Learning Center, directly behind the Ottawa school board office, 1404 S. Ash St. Ottawa Learning Center students may enroll at 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at the center.

All of the documents needed to enroll can be found on the school district website — www.usd290.org — under the “Parents” tab. Click on enrollment information and then “Ottawa High School Enrollment Packet.”

Cyclone Connect

As you know already, the “Cyclone Connect” initiative was approved by the school board and every student will be provided a Toshiba ChromeBook for their academic endeavors. These devices will be distributed to students during enrollment on the dates described above. During the enrollment process, they will need to take their Chromebook to room 311 and log in with Tori Wilson to sync the devices to our network. Once this is complete, the device is theirs to begin using. This will be the device that they keep for their duration at Ottawa High School, therefore, we have an expectation that the device is cared for and maintained appropriately. For more information about this initiative, we have a link on the Ottawa High School website.

First day of classes

Our first day of school is set for Aug. 14. This day is for freshman and new students to the school only. Any student who attended OHS last year is not expected to attend. We will begin at 8 a.m. in the Cyclone Room and dismiss at about noon Aug. 14. We will provide a hot dog lunch for all students attending. Aug. 15 is our first full day with all students. We will run a normal schedule on that day, beginning at 7:45 a.m. and ending at 3:10 p.m.

I hope this information helps as we draw closer to the beginning of another great year at OHS.
