Legalize it

8/6/2014

Silver Haired Legislative representatives from across Kansas passed — by more than a two-thirds majority — a resolution urging the Kansas Legislature to legalize medical marijuana.

I was among those voting in favor of legalizing medical marijuana because I believe it’s time to replace Big-Pharma-funded misinformation with scientific facts. Among the pharmaceutical companies sponsoring Patrick Kennedy and others who are spreading anti-marijuana misinformation are the manufacturers of OxyContin and other addictive opioids linked to 16,000 overdose deaths annually.

The far-more-safe, pain-relieving marijuana, however, is depicted as a virtual Armageddon for America. Why? Because it threatens the bottom line of pharmaceutical companies and many other special interest groups that profit from its continued prohibition.

Thousands of Kansans with Rheumatoid arthritis must buy extremely expensive medications — often with dangerous side effects — even though marijuana would safely lessen chronic pain and let them sleep more naturally.

Medical marijuana also can help cancer patients receiving chemo improve their appetite. It helps Parkinson’s Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Glaucoma, high blood pressure, Multiple Sclerosis and many other ailments. It’s even proven to be one of the best treatments for soldiers with PTSD.

It’s time to stop arresting chemo patients’ spouses (which has happened in Kansas) and make medical marijuana legal.
