Court of appeals pick

8/30/2013

I am so glad to see that Kansans now have a choice in our judges on the Kansas Court of Appeals. For too long, we as a state allowed a small group of lawyers to choose our judges. Thankfully, the Legislature changed the law last year so that our system is more like the federal model.

Under the new system, the governor nominates a judge and then our elected representatives in the state Senate choose whether to confirm the nominee. This allows “we the people” to have a choice in who sits on the bench!

Caleb Stegall has been nominated for the appellate court and both Democrats and Republicans have submitted letters of endorsement for him. Even lawyers who worked opposite him on high-profile cases have recommended him, as has the president of the Kansas Bar Association.

The new system allows highly-qualified candidates to come forward, and allows the elected representatives of the state to confirm or not confirm them. This is a great step forward for democracy.
