Leave entitlements alone

9/9/2013

I am writing about comments by U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., in the Aug. 9 Herald.

So you think such programs as Social Security and Medicare are crushing the amount of debt in our government? Just what rock have you been hiding under?

I am writing about comments by U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., in the Aug. 9 Herald.

So you think such programs as Social Security and Medicare are crushing the amount of debt in our government? Just what rock have you been hiding under?

Since I was 15, I’ve worked either full time or part time. And every paycheck they took out money for Social Security, Medicare, federal and state taxes, and everything else they could think of. I got paid maybe half of what I earned, and I worked long and sometimes hot hours to get it.

So, lady, I paid for Social Security and Medicare for almost 56 years and, baby, they are still taking out for Medicare from my Social Security check. I don’t consider this a free ride. I and many, many like me have worked our rear ends off so people like you can live high off the hog and say and act like we’re parasites on the American government.

You want to cut something and curb spending? Why don’t you in Congress all take a 20- to 25-percent cut in your pay? Cut your gas allowance and entertainment expense account — you’re traveling around the country at the people’s expense. Have you ever tried to live on less than $500 a month? Have you ever been without food because you needed medicine or to pay your utility bills? Ever live in a town with no car to drive and no bus service except the senior bus on certain days? A taxi costs as much as $10 one way from one end of town to the other. And all the doctors, grocery stores and most shopping are at the other end of town.

Have you ever done without what you really need? I’ll bet not, and you won’t. You’ll sit back and reap in your benefits, retirement pay and security guards and not think a thing about it — only that you served the American people and you deserve everything you get. That’s why you all run for government office in the first place. It’s not just you; it’s everyone who is in our government offices, here in Kansas and up in Washington, D.C. As far as I’m concerned, you are all crooks one way or another.

I’ve heard President Obama talk of cutting out military pay and their benefits, but he doesn’t have a problem sending them into war to be killed or maimed for life. How many kids are without a mother or a father because of the billions of dollars he’s spent on war?  How many millions have been given to overseas governments to keep them happy and to buy their friendship with the United States — money they used for weapons? How long do Americans intend to bow down and let the government officials who work for us take our money every month and every year to waste and then decide they need more?

Sounds a lot like good ol’ King George of England: Taking everything you got and wanting more, but giving you nothing but the shaft. I think George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and all the rest would puke if they saw everything they worked and died fighting for going down the toilet and heading for dictatorship by those in our government.

Leave my freaking Social Security and Medicare alone and cut your own pay for a change.
