Wrong newspaper?

11/18/2013

I was reading The Herald’s Thursday Opinion page ... or so I thought.

I read the editorial by Jeanny Sharp, Herald editor and publisher, in which she proposed pot be legalized in Kansas. Then I read the political column by Andy Heintz, a former reporter for The Herald who now writes for the Ottumwa, Iowa, paper. He claims Obamacare, even with its flaws, is the next best thing to a single-payer health care system. Most people understand that to be socialized medicine.

And, while I’m still trying to reckon with all this, I notice the cartoon in the upper-right corner of the paper. It shows an elephant, the symbol of the Republican Party, praying for the demise of Obamacare. Republicans need not pray, as this misguided, totally partisan attempt to implement socialized medicine will torpedo itself.

After reading all this, I thought I must have gotten the wrong newspaper. Surely this must be a paper from a liberal area of the country, not one published in the city of Ottawa, the county of Franklin and the state of Kansas.
