Carver, Weidl lead Ottawa wrestlers

SALINA — The Ottawa High School wrestling team had three wrestlers finish in the top four Saturday to lead the Cyclones to seventh place in the Salina South Invivtational.

“We did not win as many matches as we have in other tournaments, but we really wrestled well against great competition,” Ottawa coach Joe Tokarz said. “This is a large school meet with teams like Manhattan, Junction City, Wichita West, Colby, Topeka.

“It seemed that in every weight class there were several returning state champions or placers or the highest-ranked wrestlers in the state in those classes.”

Sam Carver (145 pounds) and Dalton Weidl (195) finished second. Caleb Parenti (170) was fourth.

“Sam and Dalton had great days, both losing in the finals to ranked wrestlers by points,” Tokarz said. “Caleb defeated a state ranked wrestler. It was a great learning opportunity.”
