Moundbuilders stop Ottawa

WINFIELD — The Ottawa University men’s basketball team fell 70-60 Saturday to Southwestern in Winfield.

WINFIELD — The Ottawa University men’s basketball team fell 70-60 Saturday to Southwestern in Winfield.

The Braves came into the contest winning four of their past five games. Southwestern had a 21-4 advantage in bench scoring.

Southwestern took control midway through the first half with a 10-5 spurt to open an 18-11 lead and extended it to 23-14.

Alex Lundry, who led the Braves with 18 points, finished a three-point play to bring Ottawa within 23-17 with eight minutes left in the first half.

Southwestern answered with a 10-2 run to increase the lead to 33-19 with 4:24 remaining in the first half. Ottawa cut the deficit to 38-28 at halftime.

Southwestern maintained a nine-to-11-point advantage for the first seven minutes of the second half. The Braves began to chip away. Kameron Lindsay’s trey cut the deficit to 52-46 with 11:33 remaining.

Southwestern pushed the lead to 10 at 59-49 with 6:47 left.

Ottawa’s pressure defense began to cause a few turnovers. Julian Rose’s trey brought Ottawa within 60-54 with 3:43 left. Alex Hasty’s free throw cut the lead to 60-55.

Lundry scored off an offensive rebound to close the gap to 60-57. The defense forced a fourth straight stop. Rose hit two free throws to make it 60-59 with 1:45 remaining.

Southwestern responded by scoring the next six points and taking a 66-59 lead over the Braves with 44 seconds left in the contest. Lindsay’s free throw made it 66-60. Southwestern hit four free throws to push the final margin to 10 points.

Lindsay scored 14 points for the Braves and Rose finished with 12. Rose led the Braves with seven rebounds two steals.

The Braves shot 35.8 percent from the floor, 31.3 percent from behind the three-point line and 81 percent from the free-throw line.

The Braves (9-9, 4-4) play 8 p.m. Wednesday in Leavenworth against the University of Saint Mary Spires.
