POMONA — Franklin County rivals played an interesting basketball game Tuesday in Pomona. Central Heights grabbed the momentum in the second quarter only to see West Franklin seize it in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings held off the Falcons, 62-59.

“It was a great Franklin County rival game,” Central Heights coach Rusty Cannady said. “It was two teams battling to the end. We were fortunate to come out with the win.”

West Franklin coach James Spencer said the Falcons needed to play better in the first half.

“We played a lot more intense in the second half,” he said. “They jumped on us in the first half.”

Central Heights led by eight at half, but the Falcons cut it to two late in the game.

“Coach Spencer does a great job with his kids,” Cannady said. “They never quit and they play hard until the buzzer sounds.  I have a lot of respect for his program.”

Spencer praised the Vikings.

“They are extremely well-coached,” he said. “Their kids play fundamentally the right way.”

Cannady said the Falcons made it hard on the Vikings late.

“West Franklin just hit some tough shots at the end,” he said. “Offensively we kept feeding our bigs. Our post players combined for 57 of our 62 points. We need to step up and knock down our free throws at the end of games. We were 50 percent in the fourth. ”

Tanner Erhart tossed in 27 points for the Vikings. Jordan Horstick had 12.

The Falcons were led by Matt Gray with 14. Will Duda tossed in 11 and Clay Altic, 10.

Central Heights (62) — Davis 2, Brown 6, Horstick 12, Pryor 8, Hendron 7, Erhart 27.

West Franklin (59) — Short 8, Streeter 3, Duda 11, Homer 5, Rogers 4, Gray 14, Lacey 4, Altic 10.
