HUMBOLDT — The Central Heights High School girls basketball team’s slow start offensively made it a up hill climb in Thursday’s 3A sub-state game in Humboldt.

Eureka ran out to a quick 10-0 lead and the Vikings never fully recovered. Central Heights fell 36-26 to finish at 10-11.

“We just couldn’t get anything to fall, Central Heights coach Scott Lane said. “We started out the game with no energy and before we knew it we were down 10-0. After that we played decent but we could never overcome that 10 points that we gave up early.

“We got it to within three with couple minutes left but could never get it back to even. Kenzie Hayward was our best player today. She played very strong in the post and her contributions definitely kept us in the game.

“I am so proud of the way the girls have fought back all season. After starting 0-6 and then being 10-5 after Christmas is something these girls should be very proud of. I look forward to next season and taking that next step that I know these girls can make.”

Hayward paced the Vikings with 10 points.

Central Heights (26) Erhart 4, Kraus 4, Stegner 2, Markley 2, Meyer 4, Hayward 10

Eureka (36) — Herb 7, Corns 5, Turner 2, Miler 9, Basham 11, Bitler 2.
