Lady Braves sweep Sterling

STERLING — The Ottawa University softball team opened the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference part of its season Tuesday with a sweep of Sterling College in Sterling.

The Lady Braves won 7-2 and 13-1 in five innings.

Ottawa jumped on top in both games and never looked back.

In the opener, Ottawa scored two runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

Catherine Wallace’s 2-RBI single scored Chelsea Prock and Alysssa Miller.

The Lady Braves increased its lead in the third inning.

Gabby Markham scored on a ground out by Prock to give Ottawa a 3-0 advantage.

Ottawa pushed two more runs across with one in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Braves scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Markham to give Ottawa a 7-1 advantage.

Amber Harris went 3-for-4 with one run scored. Wallace led the Lady Braves with three RBIs and Markham had two.

Markham pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.

Ottawa started with a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Lydia Budke ripped a two-run home run. Sterling cut into Ottawa’s lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning.

Ottawa exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Wallace connected on an inside the park home run. Ottawa led 10-1.

The Lady Braves would get a run in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to run-rule Sterling.

Budke went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Wallace had two hits, driving in three runs. Savannah Taylor led the Lady Braves with four RBIs.

Paige Williams allowed three hits in four innings.

The Lady Braves (12-13, 2-0) play 1 p.m. Saturday at No. 22 Friends University in Wichita.
