POMONA — Susan Zentz has a strong group of upperclassmen in her 20th year as the West Franklin track coach.

She has 30 athletes out, including returning seniors Josh Napper and Wyatt Gilbert and junior Cody Webb on the boy’s team.

“Our middle distance/distance runners should be a strong group this year,” Zentz said. “We have good numbers in all those events. We hope to improve our team’s finish at the Flint Hills League meet in May and qualify many more athletes for state this year.”

Napper was the only state qualifier for the team last season in the 100- and 200-meter races as well as in the long jump. Napper holds the school records in six events: 100, 200, 400, long jump and 400 and 1,600 relays. He will play football at Hutchinson Community College next year.

Napper is coming off an all-state performance in football.

Gilbert is the school record holder in 110 hurdles and also is a versatile asset for the Falcons’ relay teams.

Webb returns in the triple jump and middle distance and distance events.

The Falcons also welcome senior Matt Gray to his first year on the track team. He is an all-league and all-area basketball team selection.

“He should be a valuable addition to our distance group,” Zentz said.

On the girls team, the Falcons also add senior newcomers Alexa Ryan and Alexis Yelland to the team.

Ryan will compete in the jumps while Yelland will provide depth as a distance runner. Yelland is coming off a solid season in cross country.

Sophomores Fallon Dyer and Megan Ecord return after both had strong freshmen seasons last year. Dyer will run sprints and relays and Ecord will compete as a middle distance and relay runner.

Sophomore Macy Flory also will compete in throwing events in her first year out for track.
