PARSONS — So many times athletes and teams make a big improvement between the first and second game or competition. That happened for the Ottawa High School boys tennis team.

Most of the tennis players had a losing record from Emporia in the opener. The Cyclones turned that around Thursday in the Parsons Quadrangular. Ottawa won more matches than it lost.

In fact, Ottawa swept the matches against Chanute and Coffeyville.

“We improved a lot,” Ottawa coach Eric Sparks said. “We worked our way up to the better teams.”

Jonathan Kuczmarski, playing No. 1 singles, went 3-1. Chris Espinosa, No. 2 singles, posted a 2-2 record.

Vince Sylvester and Alex Reed was 2-2 in No. 1 doubles. Kley Bolivar and Luke Rea was 3-1 in No. 2 doubles.

Kuzcmarski’s loss came to Independence and a player he knows well.

“They played twice at state last year,” Sparks said. “It was a close one.”

Sparks said Espinosa competed hard and is still learning what it takes to be successful at the varsity level.

The coach said Sylvester and Reed started strong with wins over Chanute and Coffeyville and was right there with the other two schools.

The No. 2 doubles tandem dominated in their wins.
